Which foods do you crave at MIDNIGHT?

I want to say thanks to everyone for all of the amazing get-well wishes!! They made me feel all warm and fuzzy...and did help me feel better...if only for a few seconds at a time :) I did get plenty of virtual soup...and I virtually slurped it all up...but here in the flesh, it was warm water with lemon, B&B and a whole head of roasted garlic (in one sitting...is it any wonder that most of those boogies skedaddled?) that kick started my war on germs. We're all still wrestling with it a bit, but overall the icky's seem to be on their way out...if begrudgingly. So, imagine you've been under the weather for a few days and not necessarily getting any food cravings and even if you did, you wouldn't be able to taste the food anyway. It's closing in on midnight...the house is silent, aside from some gentle snoring and night-time wall kicking from a tossing, turning child...and your tummy starts to growl. You don't want to hit that creaky floorboard, so you zigzag-ily hop your way into the kitchen. The lights will definitely wake that light-sleeper known as middle child...who will surely take it as a sign that it is time to get up and get ready for school. So, you light a candle, grab some bread and peanut butter from the pantry and a banana from the bowl on the counter. As luck would have it, the cast iron skillet is sitting on the stove top. You spy the butter dish... Elvis Presley's Fried Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich from Nigella Bites by Nigella Lawson 1 small, ripe banana 2 slices white bread 2 scant Tbs. creamy Peanut Butter 2 Tbs. butter Smash up your banana. Lightly toast your bread and then spread the peanut butter on one slice and the banana on the other. Sandwich together. Fry in butter...turning once, until each side is golden brown. Cut sandwich carefully in half on the diagonal and eat. ...now blow out that candle and zigzag your way back to bed! Do you have any Midnight Sneaks...perhaps made from a recipe by Nigella? Because that is our them over at IHCC this week, and we'd love for you to join us!

Well, love Evis's music, don't care for his sandwich LOL, and I have tried it in the past. I just don't get it. I think I am one of the very few who aren't mad for this combo. Oh well, different strokes for different folks, eh? Your picture does make it look so good that I confess I am tempted to ask you for a tiny bite of yours!

Glad you and yours are doing better! Bad old germies! Glad they're skedaddling!!

  • Martha (Menagerie)

  • Martha (Menagerie)

PS - At midnight I crave pizza and beer - but then again that's what I crave all the time ;-)

  • Fresh Local and Best

This is a serious mid-night snack! I love the sweet and nutty flavors of this sandwich! I also like to toast the slices of bread in butter over a pan before assembling this together. Sometimes, I do a PB&J and banana. There are so many ways to indulge this mid-night snack!

  • Lady P

my brother did something like this for easter, but it was with bacon and had egg batter and crumbs on the top and a bit of jelly swirled on the top - heaven!!

  • Kim

I'm glad you are feeling better!! This looks like one serious midnight sneak. I have had tyler's peanut butter and jelly with banana and grilled it. It is one decadent treat, a lot like a dessert. Looks like one tasty midnight snack! I bet it hit the spot as you started to feel better.

  • Claudia

Wow, you're just an over-achiever. It took me three weeks to feel better! I am delighting in your decadent, guuilty snack - sandwich - what fun it is! And what a grand idea - what do I eat at midnight? Well, I'm a pumpkin by then.

  • Chow and Chatter

you are so cute, oh cereals or banana for me

  • Pierce

Good one! I was looking at that on in her Bites book the other day.

I'll tell my son to drop by and get a sandwich from you...he loves these. He is, at this moment, on his way to Indiana...driving since 9 PM. Now I'll worry.......

  • Coleen's Recipes

    This IS low calorie, right??

  • TKW

If I ate the Elvis Special every time I was up at night (almost always...hubs starts in with the snoring at 2:30am like clockwork), I'd have the ass the size of India.

Still, I am not proud of my go-to midnight snack: glass of wine, pepper jack cheese slices, crackers. And if I can't get back to sleep, more wine :)

  • Emily @ Marvelous Recipes

I am so glad that you and your family are doing so much better. And thanks for sharing the sandwich idea! BTW, I have an award waiting for you on my blog! Stop by and pick it up! :)

That is most definitely my kind of sandwich!! I am glad that you are feeling better. Hopefully you and your family are done with sickness for a while. Congrats on the foodshots. That is a very COOL site.

  • Palidor

I've never had the urge to try peanut butter and banana together. But your photos are amazing that it's convincing me otherwise.

Can't say that I've had midnight cravings... usually at that time of night, I'm dead to the world. ;-)

  • Hummingbird Appetite

I'm reading this in the early morning when I haven't eaten anything yet. My stomach is screaming "I need food!"

  • DDpie

Glad you're feeling better there girl. Ya know, I've never had one of these (amazing considering I'm a HUGE Elvis fan and all) although, I do remember my mom eating smashed bananas on toast. A must try (doubtful it will be at midnight ;) )

  • doggybloggy

sweetness on the sandwich and sweeeeetnessss on the foodshots -

  • sherri

Only you could make this little sandwich look amazingly delicious!

    My craving?
caramel apples with nuts on them. I could eat and eat them.

  • 5 Star Foodie

Ooo, I would totally go for this delicious sandwich at midnight! I like to mix banana slices with cocoa powder for my midnight snack :)

  • maybelle's mom

I am so impressed that you made this. great job.

  • Danielle

Mmmm your sandwich looks soooooo good!! Forget midnight, I want it right now!!! At midnight I usually crave whatever leftover baked goods are around the kitchen. I have a horrible habit of "evening out the edges" of a pie or cake just so I wont feel as bad eating a whole piece. I can justify just "helping out by cleaning the edges" much more than another piece! haha

  • Cinnamon-Girl Reeni♥

This is a heavenly delicious midnight snack. It would give me sweet dreams for sure! Congrats on Foodshots!

  • The Food Hunter

I've heard about this...I need to try it one day. It looks great.

  • My Carolina Kitchen

I'm so glad you're feeling better.

Elvis would be proud. Believe it or not, I've never had food cravings in the middle of the night. Maybe because I eat too much during the day. I'm also not a night owl. I turn into a pumpkin much past nine or ten.
    Sam

  • Debinhawaii

The perfect solution for those midnight cravings. I had this one marked too before I settled on my chocolate pots. It looks delicious.

  • pigpigscorner

  • Velva

I don't have any midnight sneaks but, if I did, it would be Elvis's famous banana and peanut butter sandwich. Man that looks good. A perfect midnight or anytime snack.

    Glad you are feeling better.

  • Mary

Grilled cheese and bacon. I've convinced myself it's better for me than bacon and eggs.

  • the ungourmet

Mmm! I ate a version of this sandwich today. It was delicious.

I would like to try grilled PB apple and bacon sometime.

  • Monica H

Glad you're feeling better. I was going to email you earlier and ask how you were.

Forget midnight, this is what I crave constantly! I seriously could eat peanut butter at every meal for the rest of my life and be entirely happy. This sandwich looks ideal for every occasion in my life. Great choice.

  • TavoLini

Glad you are feeling better!! That peanut butter banana sandwich looks GOOD!

(personally, I'm a midnight cookie eater)

  • Muneeba

I remember trying this after I saw Nigella make it on her show a long time ago ... turns out it's not really my cup of tea .. but I still love Nigella AND Elvis! My fav midnight snack is usually something savory and fried ... and possibly cheesy!

  • Jen

that looks so divine!!! i love your blog...yum! :)

  • Diana H

I skip the bread and just spread the peanut butter right on to the banana and eat it that way.

  • Linda

I have to try your recipe... cuz currently... I have a no frills way of snacking... I'm with Diana... a spoon... a jar of PB and a banana and I'm a happy woman.

  • petite nyonya

I have been under the weather the past 1.5 weeks & I know how you're feeling about being sick too :(. Hope you'll get better really soon. This banana peanut butter fried sandwich is SO tempting!

  • Culinary Alchemist

mmmmmm Love Fried Peanut Butter and banana Sandwiches. Haven't had one for years though. My Midnight snack is super grain filled bread, toasted with thin sliced of White Cheddar, no Mayo, slapped on really quick so the cheese becomes slightly melty with the residual heat from the toast.. MMMMMM Now I am starving... LOL

  • Chef E

Oh how you just brought back memories of girlfriends coming home late from clubbing...12 egg omelets sounded so good when we talked about it on the way home, but why did I have to cook them...I have not had one of these sandwiches in yearrrrrs!

  • Sweet and Savory

You have too much good food.

I am looking forward to potluck with Nigella, this week.

She has so many wonderful recipes.

  • Johan

    Hello from Holland.

  • Jamie

Wow! I grew up eating peanut butter and banana sandwiches but never fried. I did see this in the Nigella cookbook but never saw anyone do it. So yummy! And glad you are better!

  • Tangled Noodle

Gotta admit: this is one sandwich that I'm not terribly keen to try, notwithstanding the mild peanut allergy I have. With that said, the gooey-ness of it is certainly appealing. 8-)
